DJ Novi began his career at the age of 16 and had been participating in weddings and popular events all over the world since then.
With well-elaborated sets and music for all tastes, he plays the tracks and leaves no one seating!
We had a chat with him today.
In the interview, DJ Novi, from NOVA DJs gives tips on how to keep the party going and how to create a playlist that pleases all the guests.
How does the process of creating a playlist for wedding work?
As I’ve been playing for almost 20 years now, I’ve always been developing and perfecting my wedding sets.
There is a base that hasn’t changed much from the beginning to the present day, but I always try to update and modernise, trying to print my style and a surprise the track.
The brides and grooms usually hire me because they trust on my knowledge and style of playing, but I like to get a briefing from each them to feel what they like and especially what they don’t want me to play.
Sometimes the lists are too extensive or have songs which hardly will fit in the mood of the reception, so, that is part of my job to manage that. So, when that happens, I try to point it out to them and do my best to blend in the requests. The wedding is a special occasion, there is no space for disappointment, so I do everything I can to please everyone.
How to make the song selection to please everyone at the party and be exciting in terms of style?
I don’t think there’s a recipe, each DJ has your own style and directs the wedding the way he/she believes is successful. I love to mix various styles in a 100% harmonic way and without losing the flow. This is how I lift all the guests, from the older to the young ones.
The older crowd has a repertoire more stable, as the young ones are always looking for new tracks.
I like to do some School Formals and Uni formals to get to learn more about the new trends for the younger crowd.
I love legends like Queen, MJ and Madonna, as I love New Order and Erasure. I also like to play the fun ones like Spice Girls and Shakira, and the ones that marked my youth like Crystal Waters and A-ha.
In the middle of it all, there is the club music like Calvin Harris, Florence & The Machine, Coldplay, David Guetta and Avicii.
Do you have a favourite musical style for yourself?
Yeah, I like House Music.
In your opinion, what songs can’t be missed at a moving wedding party?
Good flashback remakes, years 80s and 90s, Old School, and a few surprises.
Is there anything you don’t play at all?
No. It’s a marriage, and I’ll play what the bride and groom ask for.
Do you take guests’ requests during the party?
Yes (and No).
If it’s a constructive request, I love to receive them and play it, but if it’s a song which does not make sense, which can compromise the flow, I have to think twice before playing it.
Sometimes, it’s a hidden treasure. I love it when that happens!
Some guests know the group better than us, they know some unthinkable song that makes a lot of sense for that crowd for a God-knows reason.
It could have been the soundtrack of a memorable trip, or they used to listen together at High School, we never know. It’s a great choice, but most of the times, it’s now what happens.
What was the most unusual request you’ve ever received regarding the playlist or the choice of a song?
Usually, I’m lucky with the requests!
Do you offer different packages for ceremonies and receptions? How do they work?
In my company, NOVA DJs, we offer a few different packages and they all can be tailored accordingly to the couple’s wishes.
We must consider the size of the party to properly dimension the gear to be used, the mood the couple wish to have and some extra technical details.
We are a professional mobile DJ hire company, so we are fully prepared to set up in virtually any venue or location.
Do you work all by yourself? Where do you serve?
I started all by myself a while ago, but it was impossible to do it all by myself, so, nowadays I can count with about eight highly skilled professionals to help me with all of our clients.
They are about five hand-picked DJs to play at weddings and a couple of extra professionals to help with the setup, office work and customer service.
Our main clientele is in Sydney and surrounding, but recently we opened a new branch in Adelaide. So, now, I can say we serve NSW, SA and QLD, but when requested, we are open for events in other regions, as we have done in the past: Canberra, Melbourne and even Bali!
Finally, we’d like you to give us an idea of the best wedding songs, in your opinion.
Well, that is a thought and a long answer.
I’ll put a couple of playlists together and share with Oneflare couples on my website.
Thanks a lot for your answers. If anyone is interested in hiring DJs from NOVA DJs, what is the best way to get in touch?
I’d suggest to start by visiting my page on Oneflare and send us a message.
We’ll be thrilled to be considered for the big day!
Thanks for the opportunity to be here sharing some of my experiences with you and your couples!
